Keep Your Cool!
Has your laptop become a lap warmer? Laptops have a lot going on inside a small case. It’s bound to be warm in there. When your laptop starts giving off too much heat, it could affect performance, cause random shutdowns, and even damage internal components.
Over time, dust and oils can build up on internal fans and external air intake vents of your laptop causing overheating. Keeping the air intake vents free of dust is the easiest way to keep your laptop cool. Periodically blow out the vents with canned air or a soft brush. If your internal fan gets clogged, it could need replaced or your case opened up to remove the dust. This is much easier on a desktop computer than on a laptop.
If you use your laptop by sitting it on your lap frequently, this could inhibit air flow through the vents on your computer. Consider using a “laptop pillow” which has a soft surface on the bottom for your lap, and a hard level surface to sit your computer. This will keep the air vents from being obscured and keep things cooler.
Another option is a cooling pad. These pads create additional air flow to keep your computer cooler. Many of them will plug into one of your USB ports needing no additional power. They generally also come with a regular plug in. These start at around $30.
Some computers, particularly gaming computers, come with a program that gives you a readout of what the internal temperature is and if your fans are working properly. Simple steps of keeping your laptop as dust free as possible and sitting your computer on a hard flat surface when you can will help your computer keep its cool.

I’ve lived in the Randle area for the past 20 years, moving here from Kent in 1999 to get out of the city life and never looked back. I have three children, my oldest daughter lives in Seattle and the younger daughter and son live in Randle. I’m blessed with three beautiful grandkids.
I started working with computers in the early 80’s when I worked at the Air Traffic Control Center (FAA) in Auburn, WA. I worked there for 12 years and eventually ended up in the computer lab overseeing new Air Traffic Control students doing their required computer training. From there, I took a job with Boeing in their Computer Based Training department developing the computer training materials that airplane customers receive when they buy Boeing’s planes. Except for a few Boeing layoffs and re-hires, I worked there until 2015 when our department was disolved and the work moved elsewhere to save money.
Since leaving Boeing I have worked at a variety of jobs in the valley. While working at Fischer’s Market I met Robert. After he learned of my computer background he told me he was wanting to retire at some point and was looking for someone to work with him and possibly pass the torch to. For the past 6 months or so I’ve been working as his assistant and learning his business. On March 31, I officially purchased ComputerFAQ from him and am very excited to continue his work.
