File Sharing with OneDrive

You’ve probably heard of OneDrive if you have Windows 10. It is also referred to as “the cloud.”  Windows can automatically back up your files to OneDrive as long as you stay logged into it. By default, OneDrive is turned on when you install Windows. Every time you boot up your computer, OneDrive loads. This is great for keeping your files backed up, but it can cause a lag in booting your computer, especially on slower machines. You can go into your Settings and startup apps and turn automatically starting OneDrive off when your computer is started up. You’ll need to remember to turn it on again if you want your files backed up to the cloud.

OneDrive gives you 5GB of free cloud storage space. Did you know that you can send someone a link to your cloud storage area so they can look at your Pictures, or any other documents that you have there? This is a good option if you have a lot of photos that you would like your family to see. You can create a folder just for sharing, so that you are limiting what personal information is available to view.

To send a sharing link, right click on your OneDrive icon on the lower right of your screen and select Open Folder. Navigate to the folder you want to share and right click it and select Share. Click on the text “Anyone with the link can edit.” Uncheck Edit if you don’t want to allow editing of your files. There are options to set an expiration date to access as well as a password, but those are only available with OneDrive Premium, which is not free. After you have your permissions set, type in the email address(s) of those you want to send the sharing link to and click Send.

There are other cloud storage services available other than OneDrive, most offer a free option that gives you a set amount of free storage space and then will offer you more for a price. Dropbox, GoogleDrive and Amazon all have cloud storage services available.
