Big Brother is Tracking

We all know about Internet security and how some web sites save your personal information.  One place where you wouldn’t normally think to check for your information being tracked is your map program.

I rely on Google maps to get me where I’m going on a regular basis.  It’s very easy to use and gets me where I’m going with voice prompts and a map view if I want to look at it before I leave home.  It’s also collecting information on every place that I go and how long I stay there.

Even though I’m only going about my normal life, this is still seems like an invasion of my privacy.  Luckily, it’s possible to get delete this information.

Here is where you can view your saved data on your travels if you use Google Maps.  From your Chrome web browser log into your account.  Go to Manage your Google account and then click on “Data and Personalization”.  Under “Activity Controls” , select “Location History”.  If you have this turned off, then you won’t have any tracking of where you have been.  The benefit of having it track your activity is that you can retrieve routes you have taken before if you want to take them again.  You can see the locations where you have been by clicking on “Manage Activity”.  From here you can get a timeline of where you have been on a map.

Underneath Location History, you can control how often Google deletes these locations.  By default, it is set to 18 months.  I have mine set to 3 months which I feel is a reasonable time if I need to retrieve any past routes I have taken and to keep big brother at bay.

As a side note, on the Data and Personalization page, under Location History, there is also a history off all YouTube videos you have watched.
