Amazon Alexa Devices and Security
She CAN’T keep a Secret!
Amazon’s smart devices such as Echo and Show devices are quite popular. You can just say “Alexa, what is the weather in Packwood” and you have your answer. I’ve never been a fan of talking to my devices, but I must admit, having Alexa play cat sounds to the dog is fun.
While doing some research, I discovered that everything that you say to your Alexa device is stored in Amazon’s cloud service. I had no idea! It took me awhile to find the recordings but eventually I did. Luckily, there is an option to delete them, which I did.
This brings me to the subject of security for your Alexa enabled devices. As we talked about before, make sure your Internet router is secure. This means use good passwords and set your security to WPA if possible.
Make sure your amazon password is secure. All your Alexa searches are available there for anyone who can access your account to see.
You can also change the wake up word to access your device. Instead of “Alexa” you can use “Echo”, “Amazon”, or “Computer” to wake up your device. This may keep your friends from adding weird things to your shopping list when you aren’t in the room.
If you use an Amazon device and want to see and clear your recorded searches. Here’s how to do it:
Open your amazon account in your browser. Go to “Account & Lists” and select “Your devices and content”. Under “Things you can do” select “Manage Devices”. Across the top select “Privacy Settings” and “Alexa Privacy”. Select “Review Voice History” and select the time frame that you want to see under “Filter by Date”. From here you can view your recordings and delete them individually or all of them.
Have fun and be careful what you tell Alexa, she can’t keep a secret!
