This week:
Powering off your Telecommunication Equipment

A frequent question I get is when and how do I turn off my electronic equipment?
A recent problem with an email provider caused their email to stop working, and after the problem was fixed, many clients still could not connect to their email accounts and were told to power off the modem and router to reset the cashed dynamic names in the hardware. A few clients called me to see if that was a good idea and how to turn off the equipment. Generally, turning off your communications equipment will not hurt anything, and in most cases will help. I recommend to POR (power off/on, reset) most modems and routers monthly if there has not been a power failure. POR’s as noted above clear and reset the information that is held in cache in the equipment. How do you power off the hardware? Most telecommunications equipment does not have a power switch, and if they do, they are hard to find and use. Just unplug the power from the equipment. You can unplug from the box itself or from the outlet it is plugged into. One should power off the router, then the modem, if they are two separate boxes. Then plug the modem in, and let it sync up with your ISP, and then power on your router. Doing this POR should not impact anything on your personal network and should help. The only caveat is if, as in a power failure, the modem, router, and your PC and printers all turn off. When that happens, the IP Address may change and can cause an issue with your wireless printer. The IP Address on your electronic devices is just like your house address; it is how all the data knows which device gets which bits of data. If the IP address in your printer changes, your PC will not be able to find the printer because to the PC, it has moved. If this happens to you, open up the printer's folder on your computer, remove the printer that says offline, then click Add a Printer, let Windows find the printer with its new address and then print away.  This step seldom needs to be done as the printer manufacturers and Windows keep track of each other's use of names, not the changeable IP Address. So, POR at will; all should be good.
