Virus Lingo
Computer viruses come in all different types and forms of attack on computers.  A few of the viruses you may have heard of are Malware, Spyware, Ransomware, and the old Trojan Horse that we used to hear so much about.

Malware, or malicious software is specifically designed by bad guys to do harm to your computer and steal your data.  They can wipe your hard drive, steal your data and financial information and even hold your computer hostage until you pay a ransom.
Here are a few examples of types of viruses.

Trojan Horse – this is software that may seem ok to download, but once on your system it leaves an opening, a back door, for thieves to steal your data.  These may be disguised as free downloadable software.

Worm – A worm virus can replicate itself over a computer network and cause damage to multiple computers attached to that network.

Spyware – Tracks your internet activity and can go so far as collecting your keystrokes – such as passwords to your bank account.

Adware – these come in the form of unwanted advertising popping up on your computer and your web pages.  They can collect data from you and redirect your web browser to different sites without your control.

Ransomware – This virus can literally hold your computer hostage for a ransom.  You won’t be able to access anything on your computer until you pay up.

Having good virus protection can ward off these thieves of your data.  There are many virus programs available on the market.  Windows Defender – which comes free with Windows 10 – along with Malwarebytes does a good job of protection.

Be extremely careful when opening email and especially links in emails from senders that you don’t know.  Many malware attacks are sent as links in emails.

Stay safe and have a good week,
