Tech Support Scams are Alive and Well

As effective as our anti-virus programs are there are still ways that scammers can get through.

One way is to pop up a notification on your screen that a virus has been detected and you should call the number on the screen for help in removing it. One I have encountered recently looks like it comes from Microsoft. The Microsoft Logo is present and when you call, you believe that you are talking to Microsoft Support. They will ask to gain remote access to your computer to fix your problem and they will ask for money.

Even though these look legitimate, they are not. My best advice is to be extremely careful who you give remote access to your computer. When you allow someone into your system, they have access to everything you have on your computer.

Remote access uses a program such as Team Viewer or AnyDesk as well as others. There have been times when I have used Team Viewer with some of you to look at a problem that doesn’t require a visit. When we use Team Viewer, I ask you for your user ID and a password that changes each time. When you give someone you don’t know access to your computer, they could potentially set up a connection that requires no password and they could connect to your computer when you are unaware of it.

If you have a message pop up with a phone number to call. Don’t call it. If it says it’s Microsoft or another organization that you are familiar with, go directly to the source to find a real phone number for them, or an email address that you use. Microsoft.com/Support has legitimate contact information.

Be safe and have a great week!
