What is Instant Ink?
If you’ve purchased an HP printer lately it probably came with an offer to sign up for Instant Ink, HPs ink subscription services that sends ink automatically when you run low.

When signing up for the service you agree to have your printer usage tracked by your printer. There are tiers of service - 15, 50, 100 pages a month and so on are your options. Plans start at .99 cents and go up to $24-- for 700 pages a month. If you don’t use all of your pages some can be rolled over to the next month.

Sounds great, right? It can be-- if you choose your plan wisely. If you go over your allotted pages, you will be charged for extra pages in 10-50 page increments, depending on your plan. You can change or cancel your plan at any time.

Your printer must be connected to the Internet in order to use Instant Ink. If your Internet service goes down and you print a 50-page report while you are offline, the next time you connect your printer will report the page count and it will be added to your monthly allotment.

When you sign up you will be sent ink cartridges. These cartridges have a chip in them, informing HP when your ink is running low, sending new ink. According to their website, you can use your own ink – without the tracking chip – in your printer along with your Instant Ink purchased ink. I haven’t figured out how to do this successfully. When helping a client with this issue, I kept getting a message saying that the ink wasn’t genuine Instant Ink and I couldn’t get past the error.

This service could save you some money if you can choose a plan that meets your needs consistently. If you have large projects that you print occasionally but then your printer sits idle for weeks at a time it may be harder to get the right balance and choose the correct plan for your needs. If you decide to try it, remember you can cancel/change your service at any time.
