Cutting the Cord
A lot of people are “cutting the cord” to choose streaming TV services instead of cable or satellite tv. To stream or not to stream? What are the benefits?

If you are looking to save money, streaming may be for you. There are many streaming services - Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Paramount, Peacock, etc. Each service has benefits; some, offer a free option with a limited number of shows without a monthly fee. Some give you access to a local channel.

By choosing streaming, you choose which services and therefore channels to subscribe to. There is a monthly fee in most cases. Some cost as little as $5 a month. Some offer tiers of service: free, limited commercials, or commercial free, each going up in price. Many offer a free week for you to try it out. You will still need to provide a payment method to get the free week as they will automatically charge you at the end of the free period if you don’t cancel.

Streaming does have some drawbacks. If you have a large family all streaming, you may run up against data limits from your internet provider. Streaming services may also have limits on how many users can be streaming at the same time. You are also completely dependent on your internet service. If your internet is out, a lot or if you have poor service at your location, streaming wouldn’t be practical.

Satellite and cable are easy to access and offer many channels to choose from. Satellite TV services are not interrupted by internet outages and slowdowns, but the cost may be quite a bit higher than streaming services. You are generally given an introductory price for a year and then prices go up.

Here is an example of what I pay for streaming services: I subscribe to Amazon Prime, which gives me free shipping and access to Prime Video for movies and tv shows. I also subscribe to Paramount where I can watch all of the shows on CBS, plus the local news and other movies and shows like all the Star Trek series. I occasionally will add another channel for a month or two, like BritBox, which I add from Amazon if I want to watch something specific and then I cancel it when I’m done. The prices per month are, Amazon $14, Paramount with limited commercials $7 and Britbox $5, so my monthly tv budget is currently $26 per month. I only have one person using my streaming services and I only watch tv in the evening, so this is a good option for me.

As with most things, there are pros and cons to all options. Happy viewing!
