Our Sailing Master
At nineteen I sailed the Puget Sound and fell in love with boating. Pond, lake or ocean it makes no difference if there's a boat I'm all over it. I love the open water and the feeling of freedom it brings and just because I've been on a boat doesn't mean I know how to captain one. There's many things to know: weather, equipment and charting a course just to name a few. To chart a course you must figure bearing, speed, distance and time you will travel. A captain or sailing master has learned these things so that everyone who sails with them can trust in their understanding of maps and how to chart a correct course.
If we live without any particular destination plotted letting life's current take us where it may we'll end up lost or crashing on the shoals. Likewise if we float aimlessly through life seeking only personal pleasure we will be ill prepared for the storms that will arise. Yes the wind will carry you, but if no one is at the wheel you'll be pushed to and fro. Proverbs 14:12, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but the end of it is the ways of death.” There has to be a sailing master, someone who knows the way; Jesus is that sailing master. He alone knows where the shoals are. He knows the best possible course to chart for us. He's intimately familiar with the storms that can and will arise. Are waves crashing all around? Are you being shattered on rocky shoals? Do you feel as if you're going in circles? Give Jesus the helm and let Him be your sailing master.
“The righteous are guided and protected by the Lord, but the evil are on the way to their doom.” Psalm 1:6
