There are two phone scams that are going around now. They have been on the news, but just in case you have missed them, here is a reminder. The first is a phone call from someone saying they are from the I.R.S., you have back taxes, and there is a lawman on the way to arrest you as you speak. But you can make a phone payment (giving this crook all your banking information), or you can go to WalMart and buy a “Greendot” cash card and mail it to them. Remember, I.R.S. does not do any business via phone, without out a letter or personal visit first. Also, it never takes payments via cash card. If you get a call from someone saying they are from the I.R.S., just hang up. If they call back, call the sheriff and report it.
The next phone scam is pretty much the same. In this one the caller is from Morton PUD, saying your account is past due, and a worker is on the way to your house to disconnect your electrical service. Again, just hang up on them and call the law. Remember you cannot trust the caller ID that is displayed on your phone. It may not be the number that is being used.
No Government agency or utility will cold-call you asking for money; even bill collectors must first send a letter and alert you that there is a collection action against you before they can call. Then, by law they cannot be abusive or use scare tactics to get you to pay over the phone. When in doubt, hang up and call the public number for the institution that supposedly called you. If there is a problem with your account, they can tell you then, and you know who you called.
NEVER EVER GIVE YOUR BANKING INFORMATION TO ANYONE ON A COLD CALL; if you don’t know to whom you are talking, just hang up.
Remember, you pay the phone company for your convenience, not that of others.
