Modem/Router Problems and troubleshooting
A rash of calls this week from clients unable to connect to the Internet. When I looked at the Modem/Router, usually the one that CenturyLink uses, I found one problem: the Modem/Router was not connected to the Internet. This was after the power outage but may have been related.
These Modem/Router black boxes have two pieces of equipment in one case. The Modem is the DSL and Internet lights; this part of the box does the talking to CenturyLink and sends data back and forth. The Router part is the other lights; it “routes” your data from the different devices on the Modem/Router to the Modem to get to the Internet.
The Modem side of the box has three lights that show your connectivity with CenturyLink. As you look at the black box, the Modem lights to check are,
(1)The power light. If this one is out, check the power cord and make sure it is not unplugged either at the Modem/Router or in the house wiring. Power strips require checking they’re not turned off or not working.
(2) The DSL Light; this should be on solid green. If it is out, there is a problem between your Modem and the local phone office; time to call CenturyLink and let them know you do not have a DSL light. If you don’t have a DSL light, the next light, the Internet light will not be on either. If you have DSL and don’t have a green Internet light (on the newer Modems, the light is a world icon), then unplug your Modem for 10-20 seconds and plug it back in and wait for up to two minutes for all three lights to come back on. The Internet light might be on solid or blinking green; if it is green, you should have Internet on your PC. If the Internet light is still out or red, it is time to call CenturyLink and see what they can do. The Internet light tells us that for some reason your Modem cannot sign on to CenturyLink.
The other lights, the E1-E4 and the Wireless lights, show that there is a PC plugged into the Router and the Wireless is turned on and working on your Router. If DSL and Internet Lights are not on, you can ignore Internet until DSL is green.
I hope this helps the next time you have a problem getting the Internet to work.
Til next week
