This week:
Browser, scary pop-up

Recently, while setting up a new PC, almost ready to hand over to the customer, I typed what I thought was the URL for Microsoft in the browser. Right after I pressed “enter,” a virus alert window popped up, indicating that the PC had a virus and to call an 800 number to get the PC cleaned. Most of us have seen this at some point in our computing lives. Since this was a brand new PC, I knew there were no viruses in it, and none that would tell me that they had infected my machine. The scary part, even for me, was that all controls on the browser were disabled; clicking on any control icon would yield no result in the browser, but I did discover that keyboard commands would work. I could use ALT+Tab to cycle though the open windows, and after using ALT+CTRL+DEL keys to bring up the shutdown menu screen, I used “Task Manager” to find the offending popup and ended its task. As I have not seen any of these before, I did more investigating and found the URL that brought up this scare screen was www.microsfthelp.com/alert. What happened was that when I mistyped www.microsoft.com, the company that has this web site, has put many mistyped URLs in the Domain Naming Server system. This system is a collection of thousands of servers and takes the URL’s we type in then uses the system to find the address of the website we are looking for. Without this system, we would have to know the IP address of every website we ever wanted to browse. (i.e., IP Address = 192.168.1.1). So when I mistyped “Microsoft,” this company’s DNS sent my browser to the above URL to try to scare me into calling the number and paying money to have my locked screen unfrozen.
Be careful what you type in the address bar; if it is wrong, a hacker can redirect your browser in attempt to extort your money, or worse, and actually damage your PC or get your personal data. It is that easy.
