A client and I shared a dilemma last week; she could not sign on to their email because the password stopped working. When I tried to change the password with CenturyLink I could not, as the password recovery questions had not been set up. When we called the help desk, and tried to access the account, we could not, as the account had been set up with only the husband’s name allowing no other names for access.
Because the person had passed away, to now change access to the account, we needed to fax a copy of the death certificate and information regarding the person who now legally has access to the account.
I write this to let people know of the need to be proactive and think of the inevitable, no matter what age, and to have two people with access to any online accounts.
After a person passes, someone needs to close out their digital and online life. Having two with access makes it much easier for the person that will have to do it. Facebook has a new option in “settings” that enables you to give a Facebook friend access to your account to control it after your passing. Google has an “Inactive Account Manager” option that also allows you to name someone to have access to the Google account and data.
In addition, to help someone close your online life, it is important to have all your online accounts and itemized and updated passwords kept in a safe place.
Now is the time to think ahead (as depressing and sad as it is) as the more you can do now, the easier it will be at the end.
‘til next week
