This week: Danger
As I believe we are all aware, hackers are creating havoc with our PC’s; we keep getting adware and home page changes on our browsers, popup ads, and our search providers are changed.
This column is a warning: it is going to get worse, and more vicious viruses will be the norm in 2015 and beyond.
One of the worst is the “ransom” style viruses; the “CryptoWall” virus was the subject of my August column. This is a virus that encrypts all the personal data on your PC and any backup devices connected to your PC. I believe that even a CD/DVD backup would be affected if the disk was in the drive. There is now a new version of CryptoWall that appears to be even more effective and harder for law enforcement to trace back to its source.
So what can you do to protect your data? Back up often your data. A CD/DVD is probably the best and safest. If you do not use read/writable disks, even if the disk is in the machine, I do not believe it could be rewritten, but removing the disk would ensure no changes to your data. If you have too much data and need to back up on an external hard drive, make sure you disconnect the hard drive after the backup. If you use a backup program, the current versions require the drive connected at all times to keep your backup and PC in sync, but that will then open your back up to encryption. Either set up the backup program for a weekly full back up or only run a manual backup.
I personally prefer to create my backups with click and drag; I click and select all the data I want to backup and drag it to my backup hard drive and let it run. One advantage to this is you do not need a backup program to restore your files; if you need a file, plug in your backup and copy the file needed back to the PC. I am finding in my testing of backup programs that even the online cloud backups are very hard to learn and control if you do not want to leave your back up device connected at all times.
Call or email if you have questions.
‘til next week
