This week:  Free is not free
In the last week, viruses, malware, ad popups, and PUPS (Potentially Unwanted Programs) have inundated my days, all in user-infected machines. All these latest infections were from clients trying to find a “free” program, or, in one case, new cursors to replace the boring ones Microsoft has. The client typed in a browser “free cursors,” and in the search returns there were “Free Animated Cursors.” They clicked on one and the next thing they knew they had 15 new programs installed on their machines, taking control and not letting them get any work done because of all the pop-up ads. I cleaned their machines, and within three days got another call; pops-ups were taking over again. I looked at the infected machine again, and this time there were more than 25 unwanted programs, and my client said they had not looked for anything free on the Internet, and in this case it is probably true. One of the programs from the first infection left a little bit of itself on the machine after removal, and the next time my client went online, this program went out and found its friends and downloaded the malicious programs. These programmers are getting very sneaky; I now have to install two new anti-virus programs to look for programs called “RootKits,” and they used to be very malicious programs and would load other programs to harm your machines. This time they are used to fill up your machine with pop-up ads. In one case there is an ad generator called “ad by savepathdeals;” it covers your browser screen with ads from legitimate companies, and if you click almost anywhere on your browser screen, it takes you to the ad.  This one is not playing by the rules, as usually I can just go to “add remove programs,” and the virus will be there and I can uninstall it. This virus does not give me that option. As of writing this, I know how to remove this virus. Yes, there are great free things on the Internet, but it is hard to tell the good companies from the takeover malware companies.
‘til next week
