This week: Getting to the Internet Part - 1
I have had several calls this summer with complaints about getting to the Internet. In almost all the cases I found nothing wrong with the PC, but major problems with the local connectivity providers.
I have heard that CenturyLink is in the process of upgrading our service here in the valley and believe this is true, but like all upgrades, there is a time when service is worse than usual as equipment and software is swapped out. It does not appear to me that CenturyLink has spent much in doing the upgrade; I see no extra trucks or people working in the area, so I assume that the company is trying to do the upgrade with the same techs, in-between service calls. This means it is going to take a long time before we see much, if any, improvement in our access to the Internet.
That being said, that does not mean we have to put up with slower speeds to our house than we are paying for. We pay for access to our home in bits per second (BPS). Most of us have 1.5 MBPS (Million bits per second). This is stated on your bill, and if you do not know what speed you are paying for, check your bill. There are some areas where the distance and old wire restrict the speed to the slowest of 512MBS, but some places can get up to 10MBS. I have found that these speeds are pretty much the same in the valley whether you have CenturyLink, Wave Broadband (Cable), or TDS in Salkum.
How do we know how fast our internet connectivity is? I use three speed test web sites: www.speedtest.org, www.speedtest.net, and speedtest.centurylink.net. Speedtest.net and speedtest.centurylink are the same test site, but CenturyLink techs want you to use theirs. Speedtest.org is the easiest just click on the start test button. The other two need you to select a target server someplace on a map. Sometimes, if the line speed is too slow, these sites will not display and you cannot test your speed, but the fact that it is so slow is a good indicator of a problem.
Next week where can the problem be?
