This week: Windows 8.1 tips

I am still learning Windows 8.1 but have found a few things that I hope will help the transition to 8. In XP, Vista and 7 a password was optional to get to the desktop.  Windows 8 is very cloud-based and high-security; a password is required to sign in to your Microsoft Account. Windows 8 prefers a Microsoft Account; you can use other email addresses, or when installing use a local PC account, but if you do, many features will be limited or not available. When you sign up for a Microsoft account/email, a password is required. Windows 8 then uses this account as your signon. Windows 8 also defaults to a locked screen when the monitor or PC goes to sleep, and since the default time-outs are 10 minutes for the screen and 30 for sleep, one ends up entering the password often throughout a day, and if you have a very secure password, it can be a pain. But you can turn off the locked screen and eliminate entering your password each time. To turn off the password, move your mouse to the upper or lower right of your monitor, or press the Windows key and “c” click on the “settings” gear icon; on the next screen, click on “Change PC Settings.” Click on the next screen’ click on “accounts;” on the next screen click on “sign in options.” On the next screen the “Password Policy” says “password is required to wake this PC from Sleep;” click on the “change” button, and it will toggle between needing a password or not needing one. If you change it from needing a password to not needing one, a warning box pops up to make sure you know that your PC is less secure. You have to click the “Change” button again to change to no password. I will add more hints and tips as I come across them; if you are using Windows 8 or 8.1 and have questions, call me or send me an email and I will research the answer for you and the rest of my readers.
‘til next week
