This week: Windows 8.
This is my 700th column, my first one published in the Shopper July 5, 2000, I want to thank all my loyal readers, the staff at the Shopper, my proofreader and editor Edie, and Dave Bunting for allowing me to write this column; I’ve enjoyed it very much.
It appears that we PC users will be using Windows 8 and its updates for the foreseeable future so I will start writing columns about using the new interface to ease the conversion. The new operating system is touted as being safer from online attacks, one of the major reasons the plug was pulled on XP, and all the holes hackers could exploit were eliminated. So after twenty years of both Microsoft and hackers honing their skills, we hope that Microsoft programmers have learned more than the hackers.
To save some major programming and to try to make all the three platforms (PC’s Tablets, and Smart Phones) as safe as possible, Microsoft used the supposedly safer programming philosophy of Smart Phones to create Windows 8; they just forgot that PC users are not like Smart Phone users in that they rely on mouse and keyboard. That being said, as I use Windows 8.1 and get used to not having the “Start Button” I find Windows 8.1 okay. I use the “Desktop” that is just like Windows 7. When you install a new program/App, it shows up on the “Start Screen” but you can put a shortcut on the “Desktop” screen to click on an icon to launch a program just as with XP/Vista/7. One of the most-used icons in 8.1 is the “Windows” icon placed where the Start button was. Left-click on the icon and it takes you to the “Start Screen.” Click it again, and takes you back to the screen you came from. Right-click on it, and a menu pops up that seems to me an odd assortment of shortcuts to control panel utilities. The most useful is “Programs and Features” that allows the removal of unwanted programs. There is “File Explorer,” the utility that we use to “Explore” the hard drive; this is what used to be the “Computer” icon in XP. Then at the bottom is the easiest way to shut down your PC, where I will continue this next week.
‘til next week
