This week: System Restore

I wrote about “System Restore” some time ago but have had good luck in the last few months with being able to use it to remove viruses. System Restore runs on your machine at all times. When you install new software, either from CD/DVD or download, as part of the installation (if the company that produced the software follows standards), a copy of the current system is created in a hidden file on the hard drive. This backs up system files and currently installed program files. It does not backup any personal data, so there is no problem with your data being changed. Say you downloaded a new program from the Internet and after the wanted program is installed, you see several other installs occur that you did not ask for, and the next things you see are pop-ups and ads, and a slow PC. Now, you want to restore your system to its prior- download state. To find System Restore on windows 7 and Vista, right-click on the “My Computer” icon on your desktop; a screen pops up, indicating “View basic information about your computer” This window indicates what version of Windows you are running, your system rating (how well your system runs with Windows), your computer name and workgroup, and your Windows Product Number. It also indicates if your copy of Windows has been activated. In Windows 7, there is a link on the left side of the window titled “System Protection;” this opens a window, and in the upper middle of the window is “System Restore.” Click on the System Restore button to start the restore utility. The first screen is an information screen about System Restore; click “next,” and a screen with the latest restore point appears. If is not the date you want, click “Show more restore points,” and more dates and what the restore was created for display. Find the restore date you need from the list, click on it to highlight it, and click “next.” The restore will start and cannot be stopped. If it is interrupted, you may have to do a system restore to get your PC back. If all goes well, after 15-25 minutes your PC should reboot, and your machine will be as it was before the download.  In XP it is harder to find; you have to click on “Help and Support” from the “Start Button,” and mid-way in the help screen is a link to system restore.
