This week: Is your PC really protected?

I have noticed in the past that almost every PC I work on has some antivirus program(s) installed on it. I have also noticed that most of the machines that require virus removal have antivirus program(s) out of date, expired, or have not been run for a long time. To keep your PC virus-safe, there is some user intervention needed. All of the antivirus programs put an icon in the “Systray” area of the screen, the area in the lower right- hand side of the desktop screen in the “Taskbar.” If you do not know what each of these icons is for, hover your mouse over each to get a pop-up with a description and status of the program it represents. In the case of antivirus programs, if there is a problem (i.e. your virus definitions are out of date, your program has not been run recently), it will tell you that when you are hovering over the icon. They will also change color; Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE-- my personal favorite) will be orange if the virus definitions are out of date, or if it has missed a scheduled run. The icon will be red if it has found a virus and needs to be told what to do with it, as some viruses should not be just removed as it could cause problems with your PC (does not happen often but can). The icons for AGV and Norton do not change colors but put a red x or check mark on the icon to alert you that intervention is needed. The problems I see most often is the virus definitions are current but the virus scan has not been run. So the next item to check is when your antivirus is scheduled to run. MCE is normally scheduled to run Sunday mornings at 2 AM, while most AV programs are scheduled at night to avoid interference with daily business, but most people turn off their PC at night so the AV programs are not run. I prefer to leave my PC turned on the nights the AV program is scheduled to run, as I do not like to fight with the AV scan during the day because it really slows down most machines. I have been called in to work on a slow PC only to find out that the AV program is running at an inconvenient time. I know many of you do not want to get into the nitty-gritty of your PC, but in the case of your AV safety, only you can set it up to meet your schedule. Your PC tech can set it up but you have to know what needs to be done with your PC to let the AV run on schedule.

‘til next week
