This week:

Another trick to outwit Viruses.

I wrote about this trick last year, and it has been verified by many PC magazines and antivirus experts since then. This is actually a two-step process. It is recommended to have at least two user accounts on your Windows operating system and that the account you use regularly not be an Administrator account. Changing your daily account to a “Standard” user stops viruses that install themselves on your machine from using the “Administrator” capabilities of your user account. If you do not have “administrative” access when a program wants to install, either by a virus or a new program/app you initiate, Windows responds by popping up a window asking you if you want to install this program and asks for the password for the administrative account in order to continue. Viruses do not typically initiate this popup, but without administrative installation privileges, they cannot install. Make sure the Administrative account has a secure password so the hacking program cannot guess the most common passwords and install itself. How do you change your daily account to a “Standard” user and create an “Administrative” account? Click on the “start button” if you are not running Windows 8 or 8.1, then click on “Control Panel,” then click on “User Accounts and Family Safety” or “User Accounts,” depending on what Windows version your PC is running. Then click on “Add or Remove user accounts,” then click on “Create a new account.” Enter the name for the new account, (I use “antivirus”, so I know this account is to be used when my PC has been attacked). Click on the “Administrator” button, then click on “Create Account.” If your are not asked to create a password, then double-click on the account, and click on “create a password,” enter password twice, and then enter a password hint to help remind you what the password is. Now click on your old user account, and change this account from “Administrative Account” to “Standard User.” Close out of “control panel” and reboot; logon to the new account and let Windows set up its desktop; make sure there is a copy of “Malwarebytes” on the desktop to run if you get hacked, then logoff and sign on with your regular standard user account, and continue to compute more safely.

‘til next week
