This week: Resetting hardware
Here is a troubleshooting tip that everyone can use before calling for tech-support. Simply reboot your PC.
Typically, on a call, the first thing I do is reboot the PC, often that fixes the problem. True, this does not work every time, nor does it always fix the underlying issue, but the reboot does fix the problem for a short time. If the same symptom reoccurs, that is an indication there is a real problem to look for.
I have also noticed that what most phone techs ask users to do is valid, and that is to turn off every piece of equipment that the PC is using. When you call CenturyLink for Internet support, what is the first thing they have you do? Power off your PC, your DSL modem and router, and they then have you disconnect the router, if it is separate from your DSL modem (this is the same for cable modems) and connect your PC directly into your modem. This does several things, especially if your tech is on the phone. He now knows that the PC is as clean running as it can be, and the extra equipment attached to the PC is not part of the troubleshooting. He also knows that the DSL modem is back to initial state.
What I found recently is that all electronic equipment that runs software needs to be powered off and on (Power on Reset - POR), on a regular basis (once a month should be sufficient), and that would not be necessary if you had an electrical outage.
One item to be wary of is to press the factory reset button, as this resets the modem to factory default, which means that at least your wireless passwords and id will change to factory default, and possibly the network sign-on to your Internet Service Provider (ISP). Your router/modem will work, but you will not know what the passwords are and will not be able to get back online.
Save yourself some time and possibly money, and POR your equipment before you call your neighborhood tech.
‘til next week
