This week: Moving (again)
For my readers, clients, and friends, we have moved again and are back in Randle. Since this is a tech column, I’ll share with you the technical problems brought on by our move from Glenoma to Randle, and the problems inherent in living in an area that is on the wrong side of the Digital Divide.
In Glenoma we had a 10MBS service from CenturyLink; when I asked to move my service to Gharet Rd., I was originally told I could keep my 10mbs service, but the next day I was left a voice mail that CenturyLink could supply only 1.5MBS. That being unacceptable, I looked at a different Internet Service Provider.
Having had satellite when we lived on Davis Creek Rd. and knowing that the usage limitations would not work for the PC business, I looked at Wave Broadband the cable company. I was first told by their customer service rep. that I could get 30MBS service, but after checking, she found they could supply only 15MBS--but that is a lot better than 1.5 MBS. Wave’s best deal (?) was to “bundle” to get a good rate for Internet, about half the cost of a la carte. I had to bundle TV, phone, and Internet services for one low price. While my cable was being installed, I talked to the installer, who told me that cable is more sensitive to usage than DSL and using the Internet from 4 to 5 PM would be slow. He knew what he was talking about; there are times when the cable Internet is very slow and other times it actually reaches the 15MBS that is promised. That was problem number one; it is not bad but is noticeable.
The next problem was the basic TV cable with two premium services. The channel count was so bad, we decided to go ahead and move our satellite TV service for better TV channels. We kept, for the meantime, both satellite and cable TV, because cable has channels that are not part of our satellite package that we feel are worth it.
The interesting thing is that having telephone, Cable TV and 15 MBS Internet and the Satellite TV are only $12 more than DSL. Why is it so difficult for rural America to get what is expected in cities? The bean counters in corporate headquarters look at the number of people here and the cost of updated equipment and tell the bosses there is not a good enough return on investment. It all comes down to money.
‘til next week
