This week: My Internet Browser is very slow.
I was looking at a slow PC; Internet Explorer would take a long time to load, and videos would not run or run very slowly. I found a browser that had been smothered with tool bars, search providers, and other PUPs (Potentially Unwanted Programs, programs that cause problems but not classified as viruses, mostly Ad-Ware).
All the Anti-Virus companies do a great job of protecting your PC from viruses, but they do not look for Ad-Ware and Malware. Ad-Ware is what cause popups in your browser and change your home page and search engine. They go looking for other Ad-Ware programs to add to your browser, and, if you get one, you will have several more in a few minutes. Several companies offer Ad-Ware removal programs; I like Malwarebytes, and because I feel it works so well, I have not looked into many other malware removers.
When you start your PC some morning to find your home page changed, and you no longer have the search engine you had last night, you might be the target of Malware. To change your search provider back, move your mouse to the upper right of you Internet Explorer browser window and click on the “gear;” this is the tools menu. Click on “Manage Add-ons;” this brings up a menu, the first item of which is “Toolbars and Extensions.” These are the browser hogs. There are some that are helpful, but if you are having problems, disable all of them first to see if that fixes your browser.
The next menu item is “Search Providers;” I only use one provider and remove the rest; I do not need any other providers. I use Bing, but they all track your searches, some being worse than others (Ask and Conduit are the worst). If you have one you have used and like, make it the default and remove the rest. Make sure the checkbox at the bottom of the window that says “Prevent programs from suggesting changes to my default search provider” is checked; that should help in avoiding a change. All these toolbars and search engines have programs attached to them that require removal from the “remove programs’ section of the control panel. If you feel comfortable in removing programs from Windows, good; if not, have your PC tech do it, along with running several virus and malware removal programs to make sure your PC is as clean as possible.
Next week-how to put your home page back to where you want it, or how to change it to a different web site.
‘til next week
