This week: More Scams and Viruses
Last week I covered “bait-and-switch” scams; the other side of this is the increase in “ransomware” viruses, the ones that pop up on your PC, indicating either that you have a bundle of viruses, and they can clean your machine, or (the new kid on the block) that this is the NSA/FBI/CIA, you have been caught doing illegal activities on your PC, and a warrant will be issued for your arrest unless you buy a “Green Dot” money order and send it to the address below. Or a person claiming to be from Microsoft, Norton, or another big name in the PC industry indicates problems with your PC have been detected over the Internet (cannot be done), and they can fix your machine with your providing your credit card number.
DO NOT be scared to tell these people, especially if they are on the phone, to get lost; they can do nothing to your machine unless you allow them to by giving them access to your PC with remote control.
Remote Control is great, I have started to use it, but do not ever give remote control to a person you have not contacted first, and then watch very carefully because they can do anything to your PC. They can fix the problem you called about, or they can lock up the PC so it is no longer usable.
If you get one of the screen pop-up ransom wares, IMMEDIATELY shut down your PC. Do not shut it down using the start button; PULL the PLUG. Do not give the virus any more time to work than it already has.
In summary, be very careful; if it seems strange to you or your computer is acting strangely, unplug it and call your favorite repair tech.
‘til next week
