This week: Windows 8.1 Part - 1
I have been testing the update to Windows 8 for about a month now and thought I would give you my reaction to this version, as many of you will be getting new machines with 8.1 preinstalled. I have written about Windows 8 several times in the past and found it was not too bad; I still stand by that, but it functions as if there are two different versions of Windows together. With 8.1, I was trying to stay away from the “desktop” that looks much like the Windows desktop we have all used for years, just missing the “Start Button.” Many of the things we are used to with Win8 and 8.1 desktop are the same. If you have the apps/programs you use as icons on your desktop, things are pretty much as we are used to; using the User Interface or Metro screen is not necessary. Windows 8.1 does have a “Start Button,” an icon of the Windows logo, and if you left-click on it, it takes you to the UI (User Interface) screen that makes your PC look like a tablet. If you right-click on it, a popup menu gives you several options for “techie” things to do, like the “control panel,” “Computer Management,” and many other features that regular users have no use for. But for the most part, using the “Desktop” with a little tweaking makes it work like it used to. One thing I found strange with both 8 and 8.1is if you use the IU to perform operating system tasks, all of them switch over to the “Desktop” to execute. Seems very strange and a waste of CPU cycles.
Next week more on the UI side of Windows 8
‘til next week
