This week: Windows XP Retires April, 2014
After a gotcha this week with a client’s brand new PC, I thought I had better remind my readers that support for XP will end April 14, 2014.
This means that it will be harder to get programs that will run on XP. I found that out the hard way on the above mentioned PC, with XP Professional installed on it and needing Microsoft Office. The only versions of Office that are available are Office 2013 or Office 365, which is 2013 in the cloud with a $99 a year subscription. When I tried to install Office Home and Business on this PC, I downloaded the setup program, (Microsoft prefers not to sell programs on DVD so everything is downloaded), I started the setup program keyed in the product code from the carton that was purchased, and it immediately said I was trying to install Office on an unsupported Operating System. It did give me the option to continue, but it also said it may not run correctly. I did not want to attempt to try the install and use up the one chance to use the product code. Yes, Office 2010 is available on Amazon and it will run on XP.
Again, for most of my clients running XP, the ceasing of support does not mean you will have to immediately buy a new PC or upgrade to Windows 7 or 8, but it does mean your copy of XP will not have will have any vulnerable holes fixed, and you know if the hackers know, they can write viruses for XP without getting stopped, and they will double their efforts to get what personal information from PC’s still running XP while they can.
Also, if you want to upgrade your programs and APPs, they may not have upgrade available. If you are looking at Windows 8, after using it for a year, I have found it is not too bad, but the learning curve to use it is very steep. But do not ignore it in your quest for a new operating system.
‘til next week
