October 28, 2009Q: When should I deworm my horse in the fall? Should I wait for a freeze?
A: You can deworm your horse anytime that you want, but after a killing frost is the best time to be sure that he will not become reinfected until spring. Also, the number of new bot flies will be reduced as you will kill their larvae that are in your horse's mouth and tongue.
You can also take a bot egg block or comb and remove a lot of the bot eggs from your horse's legs any time to reduce the number of bot eggs that your horse ingests, but still be sure to use a boticide in the late fall or early winter.
Ivermectin is still a very good dewormer and boticide; it is very reasonably priced. You can rotate dewormers during the year if your horse is exposed to a lot of parasites because, historically, the parasites can become resistant to dewormers if they are used frequently. Some worms are now resistant to ivermectin. Primarily roundworms, which usually affect foals.
If you want to know for sure how many parasites your horse has, you can take a fecal sample in to your vet and have it checked.
