October 18, 2006 Q: I heard that horses could founder on grass hay. Is that true? I thought grass hay was bland and low energy.
A: Actually, it is true. There are some genetically engineered grasses that are used for fattening cattle that have very
high sugar content. These grasses can cause a low-grade founder in horses that are fed a lot of it. If you aren't sure, you can ask your hay supplier if they have reseeded using this seed.Be sure to have your horse checked for other
causes, if your friend has sore feet.
