Ask Dr. Kaia April 12, 2006 Q: Why does it cost so much for emergency visits?
A: Okie, Dokie. Think about it. If you had to go into work at midnight, what would YOU charge? Not only your fee, but in many clinics, they bring in some of the staff, too! That costs money, as well.
One thing you can do, is try to use emergency services for real emergencies only. What is a real emergency? Well, if something life-threatening has happened to your pet, you need to take him in! That should be obvious. If you aren't sure, then call. If you have a regular vet, call her. Don't expect free advice from someone who doesn't take care of your animals on a regular basis.
Here is a real example of an actual after hours call that I got last week. Q: Are you busy? A: Huh? Q: Hey, this is Mrs. Burley Biker, Burley's wife. My husband is having a cow because our cat has matted hair on him, and he is pulling his hair out! A: Huh? O: Yeah, he has high blood pressure and his face is turning red he is so upset about the hair matts on the cat. It is his favorite cat! A: Well, how long have they been there? This is not an emergency, is it? I mean we can go down there now and work on if you really want to.($$$$$$). Q: No, I am gonna ask him if tomorrow would be OK...(pause) A: Why don't we just do this tomorrow? Q: Burley, are you going to be OK if we wait until tomorrow? "Oh, I guess, gosh, I feel so sorry for him with all that matted hair!" , I hear in the backround................................. OK, he says ok. He thinks he might be losing his job and he is just focused on the cat.........
The moral of the story: Look at your pet every so often to see if there is a condition that might require treatment and try to call during business hours, if it is not a real emergency. This saves you $$ and frees up time for real emergencies!
