for Feb. 8, 2006 Q: Have you seen the TV show called "The Dog Whisperer"? What do you think of him?
A: I have watched him, and I think Cesar is wonderful! He uses some of the same methods that are used with horses in Natural Horsemanship. What he does is use pack psychology to make the wrong thing difficult and the right thing easy for the dog.
What is missing in many dog's lives is a pack leader. Everyone knows that dogs are pack animals but many dog-lovers don't know how to be that leader. Cesar shows the owners how to assume a dominant, benevolent position, but one that cannot be challenged. He usually starts off by having owners walk their dogs for a long period every day. Not only does this create quality time for the pair, it also allows the dominant partner to demonstrate in many situations, how to remain in charge.
Many of the dogs Cesar works with have serious problems that require someone like him to give you one-on-one instruction. If you watch his show, you can see the amazing results that he gets by going to the people's house and observing the dynamics of the relationships in the home. Without this information, it would be much more difficult to find out why dogs do what they do.
An interesting observation, is that there is a preponderance of Pit Bull dogs and crosses in his personal pack. If you watch them pulling him on a skateboard, through the streets of LA, you can see that there is nothing inherently wrong with the dogs, and that they mind him like any other dog!
The other point he frequently makes is that all dogs should be spayed an neutered. This eliminates the hormonal problems which only add to the behavior problems in the home.
