for Jan. 11, 2006 Q: I have 2 rescue horses that are very thin but they have good winter coats. Should I blanket them while trying to get weight on them?
A: The way a horse's coat works, is that the hair grows long in anticipation of the winter cold. I find that the amount of hair they grow is quite a good indicator of the winter to come! After all, they can't afford to be wrong!
Once the winter coat has grown in, I don't think it is appropriate to blanket horses unless they have no shelter and are subject to wind and rain.
Horses will have dust and dander in their coats, which aid in fluffing it up and keeping the horses warm. If you notice how clean a blanketed horse stays, you can see how the blanket actually reduces insulation.
If you start blanketing in the fall, the horse won't grow the winter coat and it will need to stay blanketed all winter long. If the coat is already long, leave them "naked! "
