Ask Dr. Kaia for Dec. 21, 2005 Q: I just got a cow and I need you to do X,Y, or Z to the cow for me. I have no squeeze chute, and she ain't halter broke. Is that a problem?
A: OK, good question. Yes, it is a real problem! I wish you people would think about this stuff before you buy an animal the size of a cow!!!! If you can, buy a cow that is TAME. Cows can be halter broke, and broke to lead, the same as a horse. Just go to a dairy if you don't believe me!~
However, most cows aren't tame and they require sturdy facilities to handle them. At the very least, you need an alley. That consists of two fences about 3 1/2 feet apart that you can put the cow in. Then you put a 2 x 4 in front and in back of the cow to keep it in there. You have to have BIG, SOLID, posts arranged to make this possible. Please find out how to build one and have this done BEFORE you call a vet! Do NOT expect your vet to be able to work on a cow loose in your pasture. It ain't happening. I used to rope them in the old days, but no more!
You also need real fences. Cows aren't going to stay in the same kind of fence that keeps horses in! The best set-up is an alley with a squeeze chute at the end of it. Then, two people can handle the cow easily.
The other thing is, for Pete's sake, learn how to tell when a cow is threatening you! When she paws the ground, even a little bit, she is not happy. Never go into her pen without a whip or a stick. Do NOT call her to you like a cat, okay? Cows will charge you with what seems like no warning and toss you around like rag doll! Get on the back end of the cow and drive her. If she turns on you and paws the ground, either threaten her and turn her around or get the heck out of there.
If you have to get a cow, get one that is advertised as a "family cow". She will be tame and nice. Have the seller demonstrate how to handle her. If you can't do it, please do not get a cow.
The bottom line is that if you can't do something with her, neither can I.Merry Christmas!!
