for Oct. 5, 2005 Q: What is the subscription that comes with the animal microchip?
A: The microchip is just a small device that has a number encoded in it that can be read by a special device. The number is part of a data base that can determine who owns the animal and supplies their name address, and phone number to the finder.
The subscription pays for your entry into that database. It is completely independent and has to be paid for by sending the money to the service. It is inexpensive and the chip really doesn't work without this.
I can tell you a story of a little dog that was picked up last week by a thoughtful person and when the dog was scanned, it had a chip but the person had NOT paid for the subscription to the data base. I received a call from the shelter where the animal was and they asked me to search my records for a dog that matched the description. We were able to reunite the owner and the dog, but it would have been a LOT easier if the chip had been used the way it was intended to be!
As it happened, they could only tell what veterinarian had bought the chip and I had to scounge up the information.
So,please, have your pets chipped and please send in the payment for your subscription to the database!
