for Aug. 17, 2005 Q: Where did all these goldfish come from in my pond? I put 2 fish in there about 2 months ago and now there are at least 50 babies in there!
A: Evidently, you have a pair of adult goldfish! It seems that they spawned in your pond. This is not at all uncommon for goldfish over a year of age.
They usually lay their eggs on something that is in your pond or tank, such as a plant or plant material that fell into the water, or they will spawn on any junk that finds it's way into the pond. The male will then spray the eggs with his sperm cells and they are fertilized that way, outside the fish's body. They are able to produce a tremendous number of babies via this method, although not all will survive.
Soon, the eggs hatch and you will notice some tiny fishes in your tank. This is how it happens the only way to stop it is to only have one sex of fish in your pond!
You might consider giving some of the young away to your friends as this can go on to over- populate your pond or tank!
