for July 6, 2005 Q: My dog is terrified of fireworks. What can I do next year to make the Fourth of July easier for my dog?
A: First, you can plan for what you know is not a fun time for your dog. Have on hand some familiar music cd's, some cotton balls, and some tranquilizers from your vet.
Get your dog used to listening to music in the evening, and turn it up fairly loud, Practice putting cotton balls gently into the ears of your dog, and of course, remove them when finished!
Don't leave your dog unattended during fireworks. Dogs frequently will climb fences and even break windows out when they are very frightened. Plan to stay with your dog for the day and night, if necessary. Turn on the music early in the day and use a fan for white noise. Administer tranquilizers according to your vet's instructions. Place the cotton balls into the ears and most importantly of all, act like nothing is wrong. Your dog reads your emotions, so be sure to act calm and relaxed.
Practice these ahead of time, so it all seems natural.
The black dog was placed in a loving home and I now have another dog for adoption. She was found on Highway 12 in Naches and an ad has run in 2 papers and no one has claimed her.
