Q: My horse got hurt on a gate, and I was wondering what I should do until you get here to work on him.

A: Whenever your horse is injured, please try to determine if there are any open wounds. If there are, they should be washed out with running water and then tightly bandaged if bleeding. Anytime you bandage a horse's leg, be sure to apply even pressure over a large area; never apply a tourniquet type bandage on a horse's leg as it can damage the horse's tendons permanently.

Remember that a horse has about 11 gallons of blood and blood loss usually looks worse than it is. So, try to not panic and just apply a good pressure wrap and call your vet. Keep the area clean to make suturing easier.

If your horse is hurt, it likely won't be putting much weight on the injured leg. Be sure to confine your horse until the vet determines if there is a fracture or not. If a horse does sustain a fracture, they can still be saved but they will need to be transported to a major surgical facility and heroic measures will be taken to save the horse. Always remember that even with a major injury, with proper care and modern surgical procedures, some horses can be saved. However, it is very expensive. Fortunately, most injuries are less serious but still require prompt veterinary attention.

So, wash and keep the area clean, apply a bandage, and keep the horse confined.

The dog that had mange is still looking for a good home, so if anyone is interested in a nice male Border Collie type dog, please call.
