Ask Dr. Kaia for May 18, 2005 Q: Why is there a yeast-like odor coming from my dog's ears? Are some dogs more prone to this kind of ear problems?
A: The cause of the odor is an infection (otitis) of the dog's ear and it often involves yeasts and other organisms. This is a very common problem in many breeds of dogs that have large, pendulous ear flaps. Cocker Spaniels are notorious, but any heavy eared dog can develop the problem.
Especially if your dog likes to swim, it can be at risk. The ears need to dry our and with the heavy ear flaps that sometimes just doesn't happen. Shaving the hair around the ear canal can really help.
Your dog may need to be sedated for a thorough and careful cleaning and antibiotic treatment. Sometimes, systemic antibiotics may be needed to eliminate the problem.
Be sure to have your dog checked for any ear problem since cheat grass and other foreign bodies can be in the ear canal without you being able to see it. A special instrument called an otoscope is needed to see into the ear canal. These foreign bodies need to be removed. Summer is the worst time of all for cheat grass awns in the ears, nose, between the toes etc, so be on the lookout for these pesky critters!
