Q: I found a stray dog on the highway and brought it in to you for a check up. I was wondering why you thought that I should try to find the dog's owner rather than just keeping her?
A: Dogs frequently run off after their owner's vehicle and get lost, or possibly fall out of a pick-up, or they escape from a camper or motor home.
Often the owners don't even know where they lost the pet! I always suggest that first thing, we should scan the pet for a microchip and check for tattoos and tags on collars. Sometimes, a rabies tag will have the veterinarian's number on it and we can call and find the owners that way.
I also suggest calling the local radio stations and taking out some newspaper ads which are usually free. Also place ads on all bulletin boards. I would give it least 2 weeks before assuming that the animal has no owner. If no owner is found, some of these lost pets will make the greatest pals for their new people, seeming to understand that they were rescued.
