Q: I understand that you treated a dog that was mauled by coyotes in your neighborhood recently. Did the dog survive and what can I do to avoid coyote attacks on my own pets?
A: Yes, last Thursday night, one of my neighbors was out doing her chores when she heard an awful noise. One of her dogs had ventured into a nearby field and encountered coyotes. Another of her dogs ran out and scared the coyotes off of her small dog.
The dog was bitten about the throat latch area, narrowly missing the jugular vein and carotid artery. Fortunately, we were able to suture the wounds and treat the dog for shock and he survived. Frequently, this type of attack is fatal in small dogs and cats. Larger dogs more often survive. Many of these attacks can be prevented by keeping your animals close by during sunset, dusk and dark hours of the day. Coyotes will attack during the day but dusk and dark are their favorite times.
Spring time puts some pressure on the coyotes because they have young to feed and so they become more aggressive. Don't forget that birds of prey will also prey on small pets so keep all of your small pets inside unless you are with them during the end of the day.
