Q: Is this warm weather going to affect fleas and ticks this year?
A: My feeling on this is that without a killing cold spell this winter, we are going to see a lot of fleas and ticks in central Washington. We usually have enough cold to limit the population, but this winter, we really haven't had that.
Fortunately, there are a lot of effective products for flea and tick control. We have topicals and systemic (i.e. oral) products which are very easy to use and readily available at your vet's. In very infested areas, you will still want to treat your premises with a spray that kills flea eggs.
If your dog is shaking his head, please remember that ticks can be found in the ears of dogs and will need to be removed with special forceps.
We may have a reduction in mosquito population due to the drought that we are expecting. Don't forget to vaccinate horses for West Nile Virus!
