Q: Since the weather is so warm and nice this spring, will my mare be ready to breed sooner than usual?
A: It might seem like late spring because of the weather, but that isn't what regulates a mare's estrous cycle. Most mares go into winter anestrous in September or October and don't start to cycle again until late March or April. The cycle is stimulated to restart in spring by what is called the photoperiod. That means the number of hours in the day that are daylight versus dark. Weather does not play a part.
Remember that the first heat cycle is the transitional cycle. This cycle may last 3 weeks or longer without ovulation, so breeding during this time is futile. Only as the mare gets ready to ovulate and go out of heat, can she get pregnant.
You may find it helpful to have your mare vet checked to see where she is in her cycle before you waste 3 weeks breeding her! The following cycle is normally a fertile one.
Good luck in the breeding season 2005! Don't forget that mares should be ultrasounded at 16-17- days after last cover.
