Ask Dr. Kaia for Feb. 16, 2005 Q: What is alternative medicine and what is it an alternative to? When should I consider using it?
A: That is a very interesting question and may take a couple columns to answer!
First of all the term"alternative" refers to all medicine that is not mainstream allopathic medicine, which is what we call "regular" medicine. This includes physical examination, laboratory tests, imaging techniques such as X ray, MRI, Ultrasound, etc.followed by treat- ment involving drugs and/or surgery, chemotherapy or radiation, cryotherapy, etc.
Alternative medicine is everything else. Diagnostic procedures can include pulse quality, aura viewing, psychic readings, energy evaluation and more. Treatments then consist of herbal, homeopathic, psychic, energy, gemstone, light, sound, brainwave entrainment, hypnosis, and probably some that I have never heard of! Some alternative medicine is ancient, such as Ayurveda, Traditional Chinese medicine and acupunture. Some is recent or "new age" like aura reading, energy balancing, cranio-sacral therapy, etc.
The most important thing that I can say about the use of alternative or allopathic treatments is this: take your animal to a veterinarian that you trust and have it's condition evaluated to see if the situation is life-threatening. If it is, I would not choose that time to look for an alternative treatment. I would allow the use of antibiotics or other treatments in that situation. Do not risk your animal's life in order to try something different.
On the other hand, if your animal has a chronic condition that has not responded to allopathic treatment, then trying something else is certainly a great idea. Many of our drugs originated as herbs or botanicals and it makes a lot of sense that treatments using plants have promise. We will continue this discussion next week.
