Q: It seems that there are a lot of colic cases in the winter. Is that true and why?
A: It sure is true! It seems that as soon as weather cools off, water consumption decreases. Then, when a cold snap occurs the horses don't really like drinking the very cold water, or worse yet, their water may freeze.
In the wild, horses will drink from streams and they will, in fact break ice to get a drink. Some domestic horses will break ice in a tank, but don't depend on that!
Horses need to drink a lot of water in order to digest their winter diet of dried roughage. Pasture contains moisture, but hay doesn't have much so water intake becomes more important. Drinking too little water can cause a slowing of the digestive process causing colic. If your horse shows signs of discomfort, getting up and down, and looking at it's flanks, call the vet right away.
The best thing to do is to make sure water stays at an even temperature by using a water heater. Make sure salt supply is adequate.
An old fashioned preventative is to provide a warm cooked mash made of bran and grain to the horse daily. This works well and they like it a lot!
