Q: Last week Red Rock Pharmaceuticals called me to tell me that their unique rattlesnake venom vaccine was now approved in Washington! They had read the column from last year that asked about the vaccine and they were wondering if I would let people here know that we now have this product available!
A: Of course, my answer was a resounding YES, I would love to let all of you know that for the first time, you can protect your dog from rattlesnake venom.
As anyone in Eastern Washington knows, rattlers are plentiful and come right into your yard in the summertime! Dogs are fairly frequently bitten and these bites can be fatal. With the vaccine, your dog will develop immunity to the venom so that if he is bitten, he will still need to be treated for infection, but he won't be in danger of dying!
This means that the ultra-expensive anti-venin will not be needed, saving owners lots of money. Your dog needs 2 doses about a month apart to be protected so you should start immunization early this spring and then booster annually. You will then be free to hike and camp without worrying about snakebite, except for yourself, of course!
