Q: I read about a Yakima woman who nearly died from a minor dog bite! Can you tell me what happened?
A: Usually, the first thing we worry about with a dog bite is Rabies. If the dog has not been vaccinated, or is not current on it's Rabies vaccination, then there is a concern that the dog could be rabid and it will likely be impounded for observation for 10 days and then either released or destroyed.
The other danger that we don't often consider is that a dog bite can cause infection. Usually we consider the dog's mouth to be a "clean" mouth and infection is usually not a problem. However, if a person has a compromised immune system, or if the bite happens to inject a serious type of bacteria, then there could be a systemic infection developing from the bite. This means that the infection can travel through the bloodstream and cause serious illness.
Any dog bite should be treated by a doctor. The bite will be cleaned and the patient will get antibiotic therapy that will prevent the serious consequences.
This is a good time to remind people that there is a lot of liability involved in owning a dog that bites. If you have a dog that bites, seek professional help in training your dog!!
