Q: We are decorating for Christmas and I was wondering, what kind of decorations are safe and which could be dangerous for pets?
A: That is a very interesting question since holiday decorations can be hazardous to your pets and to your house. The most dangerous decorations are anything that is long and linear, like icicles. When an animal eats a linear foreign body, it can actually pleat the intestine around the string or tinsel and actually cut through the intestine, which can be fatal. I suggest avoiding small ribbon and tinsel if you have cats.
Also, there are some things that are toxic around the holidays. Most of us know that Poinsettias are poisonous, so take care that they are out of a pet's reach. Cats love to eat greenery so be careful with Poinsettias. More a temptation for dogs, chocolate can be poisonous to dogs. It contains a stimulant that dogs are sensitive to. Call your vet immediately if your dog eats chocolate.
Also, take care that your tree is stabilized so that playful animals don't tip it over causing a fire hazard,
Beware of any small ornaments that a pet could eat, because they sometimes will do so!
