Q: We are thinking of getting a horse and we want to know if we need a barn and how much room a horse needs?
A: Well, how much room a horse needs to survive is not that much if you are feeding hay. Keep in mind that horses do not like being cooped up and when they are they soon develop vices such as eating wood, cribbing (sucking air via mouth while biting wood or other material), sourness, bad attitude, stall walking, weaving and general unhappiness.
I would suggest that for each horse you have, you have at least 1/3 acre of grass, if at all poss- ible. This will NOT support the horse and he will still need to eat hay every day. This amount of grass will give him something to do, however.
The smaller area you have, the more forced exercise the horse will need. Also, if there are two horses, they will self-exercise!
You do not need a barn, but you do need a windbreak of some kind. This can be a stand of trees, the side of a shed, or a sheet of plywood that you could attatch to the fence on the side of the pasture that the wind comes from. This way, if the horse becomes wet, he can keep the wind off of himself.
