Ask Dr. Kaia for Nov. 17, 2004 This week we will be discussing rescuing injured wild animals.
As we all know, we are encroaching on wildlife habitat and so it is more likely all the time that you find an injured or orphaned animal. Most wild animals do not handle the stress of living in captivity, so if you think the mother could be around or the animal might recover, you should leave that animal alone. Note where it is and come back later and see if it has moved or if it's condition has changed.Firstly, most wild animal can be dangerous when handled. If you can, wear leather gloves and keep your face away from the animal and place a towel or sheet over the animal and place it in a box and tape if shut.
Be aware that on birds of prey, the talons are EXTREMELY dangerous! The beak is not as dangerous, so you need to grasp the legs first thing. With Herons, the beak is extremely dangerous and people have actually been killed by the spear effect of the beak. So you want to immobilize the head, and the feet are not dangerous.
With mammals, the teeth are usually the most dangerous element. With deer and elk, the antlers can do damage. They can also kick very hard.
Wash your hands after handling the animal as they can harbor fleas and ticks and other pests and diseases. After you rescue the animal, you need to contact and authorized rehabilitation center. Go to www.paws.org for one located in Washington.
Do not expect your local veterinarian to treat wildlife. Some of us will help you and the animal but bear in mind, that you will be billed for the work as if this was your animal. Don't expect charity. We really don't have the time to take on baby birds and such that require feeding 24-7. Some people are successful on their own with raising/rehabilitation but be aware that this is likely to be illegal. Most wildlife are not good pet prospects and should be released into the wild from whence they came as soon as possible.
So, being a good Samaritan is not always easy! Please take plenty of precautions if you take on a rescue project.
